Texas Physician, Medical Student Leaders Elected to AMA Positions

The American Medical Association (AMA) elected four Texas Medical Association (TMA) physicians and four medical student members to AMA leadership positions. AMA elected the Texans during its annual policymaking meeting taking place this week in Chicago. The physician and medical student leaders are part of the Texas delegation to the AMA.

HPV Vaccination Prevents Cancers in Men, Too

For years, scientists have touted the HPV vaccination’s power to reduce cervical cancer in women. Now, during Men’s Health Week, Texas physicians urge men to get vaccinated against HPV to prevent cancers. HPV causes several cancers in men and women, including oropharyngeal (cancers of the head and neck such as the throat and mouth), penile, anal, cervical and vaginal. Some cases are fatal.

Grants Enable Six Texas Cities to Fight Vaccine-Preventable Illnesses

People in six Texas communities will receive disease-preventing and potentially life-saving vaccinations, thanks to special grants from the Texas Medical Association’s ( TMA’s) Be Wise —ImmunizeSM program. TMA recently awarded $13,500 in grants to physicians and TMA Alliance (TMAA) chapters to provide free and low-cost vaccinations to uninsured and underinsured Texans in their hometowns.

Edinburg Physician Becomes TMA President

The Texas Medical Association (TMA) today installed Edinburg gastroenterologist Carlos J. Cardenas, MD, as its 152nd president. Outgoing TMA President Don R. Read, MD, of Dallas installed Dr. Cardenas today during TexMed, the association’s annual conference.
